Remembering Phil

In memory of Phil the lovely soul with a silver tongue who manage to convince a cranky old antique dealer in Australia to part with his star mannequin’s vintage 1940’s black velvet coat with an exquisite white fur collar as a Birthday gift after I expressed how much I liked it.  I still have it and treasure it to this day.

So many memories.

Phil the sun lover.  He enjoyed the sun’s rays that much even after having treatment at the Skin Cancer clinic he would come home, with numerous dressings over his bald head to go straight out to relax in the sun lounger on the veranda, in the baking heat.

Phil the collector of watches who would spend a whole day bartering in Bali to get the best possible price. However, on one occasion Phil forgot his watch. We were returning home after having a few drinks at a beach bar in Portugal. The local men had warned us that we would have to cross rocks by a certain time otherwise the tide would come in and we would face the possibility of being stranded. Unfortunately on this occasion Phil was without his watch and we ended up marooned on a rock, the tide rising around  us and as a non-swimmer I frantically waved my towel to attract the attention of a small passing fishing boat to come to the rescue.

Phil loved to entertain people. He was a master at entertaining a crowd and only on one occasion can I recall him being upstaged. It was at a large private party for some expats in Portugal. The crowd was in stitches and Phil was in good form. The hosts had a Great Dane who was also impressed by the performance and wanted to give Phil a kiss. The dog jumped up, placed both paws on Phil’s shoulders stared him in the eye and knocked Phil to the ground. Phil’s expression was priceless as he stared at the dog’s erection and the crowd roared with delight.

Phil love to sing he had quite diverse musical taste but one of his favourites songs I remember him singing, was a song he said he learned from his parents when they used to have a singalong.....Jumbo Jumbo sitting on the dust hole eating mouldy cheese boom boom!

You’ll always be missed Phil, but never ever forgotten.
